1964-2011, Réflexions sur une esthétique programmée
It was May 11, 1971 when the Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris opened the influential exhibition “Computer Graphics – Une Esthétique Programmée”. A solo exhibition by Manfred Mohr, it featured the first display in a museum of works entirely calculated and drawn by a digital (rather than analog) computer. Revolutionary for its time, these drawings were more than mere curiosities – they signaled a new era of image creation, setting in motion a trajectory of modernism and information aesthetics. BROOKLYN COLLEGE/CUNY MFA THESIS SHOW SHUT DOWN BY CITY
BROOKLYN PARKS COMMISSIONER CENSORS SHOW FOR SEXUAL CONTENT
NEW YORK (May 4, 2006) After a successful and well-attended opening last night, the Brooklyn College MFA thesis exhibition, Plan B, held at the Brooklyn War Memorial, was suddenly shut down this afternoon by the Brooklyn Borough Parks Commissioner because of complaints of sexual content.
The student show, mounted as a graduation requirement for the Master of Fine Arts Degree at Brooklyn College of the City University of New York, apparently received complaints for explicit subject matter from one or more visitors to the May 3 opening, and was ordered immediately shut down by the Brooklyn Borough Parks Commissioner, Julius Spiegel. This came as a surprise to the students who have been working under the direction of Brooklyn College faculty in a program administered by the City of New York. The exhibition was even attended by the President and Provost of Brooklyn College, who reported that they enjoyed the show.
Today at approximately 3:30pm, MFA students Sarah Phillips, Yejin Jun and Christopher Moss, monitoring the exhibition at the Brooklyn War Memorial, were ordered by the Brooklyn War Memorial Building Supervisor to immediately leave the premises as a locksmith working for the Parks Department changed the locks and refused to allow the students to re-enter the space. This is a fundraising event for Vancouver’s hottest emerging arts society The Escape Artists Society (T.E.A.S.): we put art in unusual spaces – inserting ‘our’ world into ‘there’ world– penetrating public perceptions of culture, genre and form. Submitted works must be created specifically for screening on Apple’s new video iPod and can be no longer than 5 minutes in duration.
The content and style of your work is open – it can be narrative or non-narrative, personal or political, and presented in an experimental or documentary style.

THE EVENT:
The ViPod Viewing Gallery will take place in a funky uptown social location in Vancouver, BC, Canada.
The space will be set up with special viewing tables: artists and guests will ‘rent’ the ViPods (each featuring a different artist’s work) for short periods – to enjoy, share and discuss the works amongst themselves.
The evening may also feature door prizes, performances and site-specific installations by local artists.
REQUIREMENTS:
Submissions must be original to the artist – they may be new or older pieces that have been modified or “ViPodified” – (altered in some way that addresses the intimate scale of the iPod’s screen) for the viewing environment in mind. Continued…

Hyperpolis 3.0: Really Useful Media
Call for Papers/Proposals
We know too much about media communications technologies as instruments of social control.
We don’t know enough about media technologies as instruments of civil society and cultural development.
We know too much about media discourses as, on the one hand, “popular culture”: alienated and commodified cultural forms; and on the other, “cultural theory”: paranoid cosmologies of hyper-rhetoric, and the ubiquitous inevitability of evil…
We don’t know enough about digital media as something other than a means to an end, as “instrumental culture”, where culture itself —mainstream, alternative, underground, or otherwise is degraded to the status of tools (some hard, some soft, all ware).
Hyperpolis: Really Useful Media will provide a forum for the discussion and presentation of some positive contributions to the field, in light of these chronic imbalances.
1 Media practices whose product is an improvement in the integrity and vitality of the culture and society in which they are embedded.
2 Media practices whose processes are in and of themselves desirable. Continued…

Please join EAI in a celebration of the videotapes of visionary artist Nam June Paik, who died last month at the age of 73. Over the course of twelve hours, EAI will screen more than 40 of Paik’s extraordinary video works, which date from 1965 to 2000.
EAI will open its archives to present a treasure trove of Paik’s videos. Works to be screened include his classic television collages, which feature collaborators such as John Cage, Merce Cunningham, Allen Ginsberg, Joseph Beuys and Charlotte Moorman. Highlights will include a rare screening of 9/23/69 (1969), Paik’s stunning 80-minute opus of electronic synthesis, as well as his earliest video-film experiments.
Paik’s works in performance, electronic music, sculpture and multi-media installation were groundbreaking and influential. His seminal body of videotapes helped to radically redefine the role of moving image media in contemporary art.
Through these remarkable works, Nam June Paik’s vision and legacy will continue to resonate throughout contemporary art and culture.

Submissions sought that explore alternate methods of temporal presentation.
Deadline: January 20th, 2006
Abstract: As computers and cameras become increasingly ubiquitous, a greater number of creators are becoming interested in the artistic possibilities inherent in combining these technologies. Media included in submission packages must be in DVD video format, either PAL or NTSC.

Each artist in Ecstasy enacts his or her own intervention into human consciousness by calling attention to mechanisms of perception and expanding notions of reality.”
The list of artists includes Olafur Eliasson, Pipilotti Rist, Carsten Höller (who did this Mushroom Room pictured above)… many more unfamiliar names in the list, and I can’t figure out which one is the “New Media” one. Can you?

The curators have announced their selection for the 2006 Whitney Biennial, which will be open to the public from March 2 to May 28, 2006.
Like usual, there’re some artists no one’s ever heard of and there’re rock star status people like Richard Serra and Jim O’Rourke.
Names that ring some bells around here: Natalie Jeremijenko, Pierre Huyghe, Paul Chan, Rirkrit Tiravanija… For the full list of artist and the official press release, see here: whitney.org/www/exhibition/biennial.jsp
Also amongst the selected are really interesting collectives/group works like the Critical Art Ensemble and Deep Dish Television (you might know them for all the Iraq-war related documentaries).
The Wrong Gallery by Maurizio Cattelan, Ali Subotnick and Massimiliano Gioni is also selected. You can also pre-order the miniature version of it here (if you are those types of people…)

// SMART ART
The European Media Art Festival is one of the most important current media art forums world-wide. For the 19th time, the festival will present a comprehensive overview spanning the whole range of this young genre of art.
Under the motto ›Smart Art‹ we will present works that question social conventions, take familiar things out of their context and subtly track down the absurdities of individual and social everyday life. The approaches range from popular subjects to provocative statements that go down new paths of artistic debate in film, installation and expanded media, making playful and intelligent use of various media.
With their critical, cheeky and smart works, both young talented artists and recognised masters of their field present new positions in contemporary media art in Osnabrück.

The people love Tom Otterness. This year, in addition to his permanant installations in Battery Park City, the 14th Street/8th Ave subway station, and his Broadway exhibition, he’s designing a humpty dumpty balloon for the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.
Otterness was a graduate of the Whitney Independent Study Program and a founding member of the artist collective Colab. Work hard enough and one day your art will be inflated to 200-foot proportions for all to see.

Chris Ware is exhibiting some of the original artwork from his recently published book, the ACME novelty library.
Chris Ware is well known as the author and artist of Quimby Mouse, Jimmy Corrigan, and the current weekly one-page strip in the NY Times Magazine, Building Stories. A couple years ago when the comics edition of McSweeney’s was published I went to see some of the original art at Jack Hanley gallery in San Francisco. Ware’s layouts are really impressive in person. All the detailing and lettering, in addition to the drawing, is done by hand. Worth Seeing.

This friday, November 11th at 8PM, Christian Marclay is premiering his new work, Screen Play, as part of Performa05. This is the inaugural year of Performa, a performance-art biennial created by RosaLee Goldberg.
Screen Play is a 30-minute silent found footage film with overlaid computer graphics that is meant to be interpreted by musicians. The piece is Marclay’s foray into the development of alternative forms of graphic scores, continuing a lineage that includes the likes of John Cage and Oskar Fischinger. The work has been produced over the course of the last year, and on friday it will be performed for the first time, three times by three different sets of musicians, including Zeena Parkins, Elliot Sharpe, and TOT trio. A full list and bio of all the musicians involved can be found here.
Tickets are $15 and on sale on the Performa and Eyebeam websites. Should be a fun event, there will be percussionists, an electric harp, a celloist, DJs, an accordion, a pipa lute, and a Max/MSP patch involved. If that doesn’t sound like fun, then I don’t know what fun is.

Fresh from the frontiers of locative media – Independent Photography, a London based media arts organisation , is looking for proposals from artists for a new commission as part of its ‘Peninsula’ programme. Opening Reception – May 25, 6-9pm
540 W. 21st St.
Eyebeam is pleased to present the premiere of What Sound Does a Color Make?, featuring contemporary and historical works by an internationally diverse group of artists who manipulate sound with image and image with sound. Curated by Kathleen Forde and organized by ICI, What Sound Does a Color Make? includes artists who likewise use technology to inspire a renewed consciousness of highly un-technological experiences — physicality, human cognition, and perception.
Artistic interest inspired by the phenomenon known as synesthesia, a condition in which one type of sensory stimulation evokes the sensation of another, can be traced as far back as the seventeenth century. For contemporary audiovisual artists, the possibilities inspired by this phenomenon have expanded with the advent of recent digital technologies that translate all electronic media, whether sounds or moving images, into the zeros and ones of computer bits. The artists in What Sound Does a Color Make? use these advances in technology to collapse the boundaries between vision and sound in a way that reboots our perception of perception itself. Continued…

CIMATICS is an international platform and festival for live audiovisual arts & vj’ing.
CIMATICS.05 is focussing on context. Audiovisuals give us the most important perspective on the contemporary, global society. If culture is an interface to the world, than this is for the greater part audiovisual. Audiovisuals don’t only seem to represent our environment. They are our environment. That’s why these media, and especially an experimental or critical approach to them, are so crucial.

from some of the rally organizers:
we are organizing a rally against New York radio station Hot 97. they are notorious for promoting negative music and messages on the airwaves, but the recent “Tsunami Song” incident is by far the worst that we have seen.
www.asianmediawatch.net/missjones/nypost.html
www.hiphopmusic.com/archives/000759.html
what is even more upsetting is that while the station is known to control every word on their broadcasts, and to force their disc jockeys to act a certain way (to be “more street”), they are now blaming the black disc jockeys on the show and are claiming it to be a “race thing” between asians and blacks.
the rally is going to be this friday at union square park from 3-6 pm. it is organized by a collation of activists, artists, musicians, and educators. the details are at this link

Contribution to book on ‘Visual Glitch Art and Aesthetics’ (Publisher/Date TBA) Current Submission Deadline 20th March 2005
The Visual Glitch, or the artefacts and visual manifestations of digital corruption have received less exposure in the classification and discourse of Art forms. Despite having a relatively significant presence, in commercial Design, Mainstream Films, Music Video and experimental Art Video, the Glitch Genre is synonymous with Audio Artists.
In seeking to accurately document the aura of techno-fetishism and Glitch appreciation we are looking for visual art submissions with the broad theme of ‘Visual Glitch Art and Aesthetics’ to be considered for inclusion in this book.
We are particularly interested in professional artists who use the glitch as a medium, to create visually intriguing or thought provoking works.

Nam June Paik, Louise Bourgeois, William Wegman and David Salle are just a few of the video artists featured in Nokia’s new Connect to Nokia section which allows 3000 lucky people to download exclusive limited edition works of art to their phones. Good thing it’s free, because you wouldn’t want to lose a valuable work of art as well as your entire phonebook in one fell swoop. I’m not sure exactly when it will be live, because I just tried and it refused to give me any art, but by the time you read this they’ll probably all be gone!

“Best known for his large-scale kinetic and sound-producing sculptures, Hawkinson has also created important works in photography, drawing, printmaking, and painting. Anticipating the do-it-yourself aesthetic that has recently become ubiquitous, he has, since the late-1980s, been using found objects and handcrafted materials and machines to create idiosyncratic works that are intensely personal yet seemingly scientific in the rigorousness of their processes.”

And we have made live performance accessible to a wide audience due to our commitment to low ticket prices.
Our dynamic and eclectic schedule reflects an ever-growing community of artists and dreamers who have found a home for some of their most daring and exciting ideas. But we will be homeless by the end of April 2005.
The Tank will be losing its space at 432 West 42nd Street to commercial real estate developers. That’s why we need you. Continued…

2cp, a performance ensemble consisting of Manli LoConte and our dear (at least to this editor) Scott Fitzgerald, will be showing a work in progress, this Saturday Feb 5. There’s some other stuff too (but 2cp is the best by far). More after the jump.
You can read up on 2cp’s progress
What does Outside/Input do?
Outside/Input will bring together artists from a wide variety of disciplines who first, have previously created interdisciplinary or challenging performative art works in the theatrical, visual, installation or media arts and second, wish to explore new forms in the performative arts. Selected participants will be asked to harness their diverse knowledge and experience in order to foster the rich exchange that is at the core of the Outside/Input development process. Through this process of exchange, Outside/Input aims to 1. expand the parameters of each artist’s project, 2. challenge disciplinary boundaries and encourage interaction between disciplines within the contexts of performance, and 3. lead the Outside/Input participants towards innovative and provocative performative products which can restructure the way in which artistic materials, media and ideas are integrated into live performance.

Gallery hours: Tuesday-Saturday 12-6
Most changes in the world around us go unnoticed. As computers and cameras become ubiquitous, artists are becoming more and more interested in unearthing these changes.
Time-distorted video, once only possible with expensive and specialized equipment, can now be realized with commonly found hardware. Photography provides a single view of a subject; video provides a view of that subject’s evolution forward in time. But when that traditional video view’s temporal linearity is distorted using a computer as a tool, the nature of the subject is demonstrated in a completely different and frequently surprising fashion. The use of layered image over time is becoming increasingly important not only in the creation of video, but also as a tool in interactive ‘physical computing’ installations.

“Although its low popularity among laypersons and non-scientists is no doubt due to its inherent complexity, we suspect that a failure in communication may be partly responsible….Thus, the Pirelli Internetional Award launches the Pirelli Relativity Challenge. An award for the best multimedia work that explains special relativity theory to the layperson.”

For the Seventh International Digital Art Exhibit and Colloquium
In a nutshell, this exhibit is to promote “artistic and cultural values created with new technologies”. The event covers two areas; the National Art Exhibit, of a competitive nature, and a non-competitive International Art Exhibit, where works by artists from other countries will be shown.
They’re calling for “Printing Works”, i.e. “the art pieces must have been created using digital tools and reproduced by any printing machine”. Interpret as you will.
Submission must arrive by April 15, 2005, for the exhibit in June. See the International Call page for more info.

editor’s note – the iDC looks like an academic research & dev hub that focuses on new media art and education, yet not belonging to any specific academic institution. their writings have too many big, empty, grad-school type words for one to actually comprehend what they are exactly, but it shouldn’t hurt knowing about them.

The research of the Institute for Distributed Creativity (IDC) focuses on collaboration in media art, technology, and theory with an emphasis on social contexts.
The IDC is an international network with a participatory and flexible institutional structure that combines advanced creative production, research, events, and documentation.
While the IDC makes appropriate use of emerging low-cost and free social software (ie. peer-to-peer technologies, blogs and mailing lists) it balances these activities with regular face-to-face meetings.

NYSCA Individual Artist Program Funds
Production support is offered annually to an individual artist project for film and video, radio, sound art, or computer-generated art. The Program supports projects utilizing production methods and tools ranging from the simple to state-of-the-art technologies. Grant amounts range from $5,000 to $25,000.
The Council extends equal consideration to a wide range of artists and genres. Electronic media artists or filmmakers who wish to collaborate with artists in other disciplines may apply for production support. Priority is given to projects that emphasize the collaborative process and whose goal is to produce a distinctive work resulting from the meeting of disciplines. Production support is not provided for projects that take another discipline as their major focus or aim to provide straightforward documentation of another art form. Continued…

The Institute for Distributed Creativity (iDC) is a new(ish) organization based in NYC founded by Trebor Scholz, that deals with issues that are very close to my heart – locative media within social contexts.
As they say it “The research of the Institute for Distributed Creativity (iDC) focuses on collaboration in media art, technology, and theory with an emphasis on social contexts. We found 3 more art shows worth checking out in the Chelsea area, besides Cory’s solo show at Team (see post below). Hopefully this will make your trip well worth the travel (allllll the way to Manhattan’s west side)
1. Jeffrey Aaronson’s “Transparency” at Kashya Hildebrand
Unmanipulated, Aaronson’s colorful photographs of New York’s cityscape capture the many reflections of urban life that exists nowhere else. A very fine, inspiring selection.
2. Emily Caigan’s “Scale Dances” at A.I.R Gallery
An installation about body image, using bathroom scales as a metaphor representing our obsession with weight. Viewers can step on the different scales laid out in the room, and an audio documentary plays in the background, of women’s voices talking about their experience and obsession with body image.
3. Christian Marclay’s “Shake Rattle and Roll” at Paula Cooper
New video installation by Christian Marclay, inspired by works of Fluxus artists.

On Monday, January 23rd, Artforum is hosting a panel talk with past and present Whitney Biennial curators at the New School. Panel members include 2006 curators Chrissie Iles and Philippe Vergne, along with past curators Klaus Kertess, Louise Neri, Lisa Phillips, and Elisabeth Sussman.
This could be an interesting talk, the Whitney Biennial is always so contentious. The talk could shed some light onto the inscrutable selection process, personally I think that curating the Biennial has got to be one of the toughest challenges in the world of art. There are over 200 biennials in the world today, plus the rise of hundreds of art fairs around the world. Still though, at least here in the US, the Whitney Biennial still seems to regularly kick up more furor than any other museum show.
Event Details:

A New Type of Unfortunate Occurrence is interactive environment that explores issues surrounding genetic research and its potentially disastrous outcomes by Paul Davies, Leslie Clague, Jake Woland and Nick Chapman.

Opening Sat Dec 4th, 8pm

212.563.6269
info@thetanknyc.org
Special opening night performances by Nick Chapman, liek twi and the mu ensemble, Damian Catera, and others.
from their website:
” In the future there will be a new type of man-made disaster – a genetic disaster. The first recorded genetic disaster hasn’t occurred yet. But it will – it’s simply a matter of time. Genetic disasters will join the ranks of other synthetic disasters and perhaps we will eventually view them as more or less inevitable.
Eventually, this type of disaster, like chemical spills and train wrecks, will simply be part of society and will be dealt with as a fact of life. Just as we have become accustomed to the risks and costs of nuclear power and atomic weapons, we will add in the risks and cost of genetic engineering.
There are many complementary threads of scientific research, such as GM foods, cloning, virus research, and the Genome project, whose combined consequences are not known. For the most part, we are not in control of how technology evolves our society. These changes will happen when they happen, and the world, for better or worse, will be a different place with a new type of unfortunate occurrence. ”

The Experimental Television Center announces the next deadline for the Artists in Residency Program, December 15, 2004, for residencies between February 1st and June 30, 2005.
***************
The content of their email is below. Check out the site, they have some sick equpiment. (for us analog video fiends) I applied last year for spring break but was turned down cause i was a student (stupid school). It a pay-to-play residency (i think its like $100 for the week, you figure out lodgings unless you want to sleep on the floor of the studio), but these people have been doing this shit longer than most of us have been alive.
back to the email
*********************************
The Residency supports contemporary electronic media art projects. The studio workshop environment offers access to an image processing system, intensive individualized instruction and time for exploration and personal creative growth. Artists have an opportunity to study the processes and techniques of analog and digital imaging and to then use the system independently in the creation of new works. Participating artists have complete aesthetic and technical control over all aspects of the making process.
The image processing system is a hybrid tool set, permitting the artist to create interactive relationships between older historically important analog instruments and new digital technologies, and to explore boundaries and intersections within narrative, documentary and social issue traditions as well as more experimental forms. The system offers a unique experience because it is an integration of historically significant artists’-designed analog modules such as colorizers and image processors, as well as commercially available tools, and integrates both analog and computer-based components.
The postmark deadline is December 15th. You are encouraged to email the written materials.
To apply please send the following:
1. A brief project description
2. A current resume
3. A prioritized set of dates between February and June 2005.
4. A sample of completed work with SASE if you wish it returned.

Miller Puckett is performing Pluton Friday & Saturday at The Monkey, a new audio venue in the city.
For those of you who have been living in a hole for the last few years, Miller is the author of MSP (the DSP part of Max/MSP) and now PD. Also, if you’ve been living in said hole, you probably don’t have the $20 to get into the venue (seating is limited to 35-40 a night).
This ought be a pretty durn fun time for the audio nerds out there: a new venue with surround sound, a guy who is deified by some, MIDI and a bunch of guys discussing Markov Chains. One thing’s for sure, it’ll be more exciting than Davis Zicarelli’s talk at ITP last year.
Be careful though, when I got my ticket (through f***ing Paypal) for Friday, I was instead sold one for Saturday. Hopefully that’ll be resolved, or else I’m gonna have to ask one of you for a review.

Thursday, December 2
6:00 PM
in 702 Hamilton Hall
Columbia University’s Morningside Campus at 116th and Broadway
Mr. Ippolito’s lecture, “How to Hack Copyright for Fun and Profit,” will examine alternative approaches to intellectual property and creativity.
Abstract
Now that the music labels have sued 6,000 college kids and universities are spending more on anti-plagiarism software than on student art exhibitions, you’d think young people would finally grok the message that sharing is bad. But as this presentation aims to demonstrate, a cadre of dedicated artists, musicians, and activists are offering digital creators an end-run around broadcast flags and RIAA summonses–from tools for embedding open licenses in music files to an online environment for sharing art and code to a semantic search engine for remixable art and video. In conclusion, this presentation will examine the question of whether such innovations are sufficient to prevent the lockdown of creative culture.
Jon Ippolito is an artist, a curator at the Guggenheim museum, and co-founder of the Still Water program for network art and culture at the University of Maine, where he is an Assistant Professor of new media.
This is the fourth lecture in a series on Open Source Culture. The series will conclude with a lecture by Cory Arcangel on December 16.
For more information about upcoming speakers, and streaming video of previous lectures, please visit http://www.columbia.edu/cu/arts/dmc/lectures.
The Art & Technology Lectures are organized by the Digital Media Center and sponsored by the Computer Music Center. Streaming video of the lectures is produced in partnership with the Columbia Center for New Media Teaching and Learning.

Psst! Electronic Art is an interesting piece from Marc Spiegler in Slate giving a brief overview of the problems encountered when dealing with digital reproduction of artworks, covering issues such as authenticity, validity and the nature of collecting. Unfortunately, he merely skims the surface of these issues and whets the appetite them without getting into any of the meaty consequences in detail. If anybody knows of any other articles which examine these topics in more detail, please shoot me an email.

NEW YORK, NY (November 15, 2004) – In the spring of 2005, Creative Capital Foundation will accept proposals for its 2005-06 grant cycle supporting work in the performing arts and emerging fields. The nonprofit arts organization has implemented a new application process: to apply for a grant, artists must first submit an Inquiry Form, which will be available February 14, 2005 on the foundation’s website, www.creative-capital.org. The deadline for completed Inquiry Forms is March 14, 2005; those invited to apply will be notified in June 2005.
This year, innovative literature has been added to the emerging fields category. According to Sean Elwood, director of grantmaking & artist services, “We define innovative literature as work created by writers who challenge traditional notions of literary forms and concepts. We are interested in projects by literary artists who are striving to express themselves in alternative ways through manipulating language, formal structures, or new processes.”
Innovative literature may include projects working in or transcending the genre categories of poetry, fiction, and creative nonfiction.
As in past grant rounds, forty funded projects will receive approximately $400,000 in initial grants. In addition, grantees are eligible for follow-up support in the form of advisory services and additional financial assistance.
Programs To Date
Now in its fifth year, the New York-based foundation has awarded more than $3.2 million in grants and supplemental support to 158 artists from 24 states and the District of Columbia. Creative Capital is currently in the process of selecting grantees in visual arts and film/video. Those grant winners will be announced in early 2005.

About the Book
From 1997 to 2001, over 140 artists set up studios in temporarily vacant space provided by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey in the upper reaches of the World Trade Center’s Tower 1. In an atmosphere of conceptual risk-taking, they produced a broad range of work, from panoramic cityscapes and discrete sculptural objects to physically integrated site-specific projects and new media performance. The residency was initiated to serve emerging and mid-career artists and encouraged conceptual and aesthetic experimentation.
In this program retrospective, Site Matters documents an exceptional and atypical breadth of projects by some of today’s significant young artists, including Stephen Vitiello, Paul Pfeiffer, Naomi Ben-Shahar, Monika Bravo, Gelatin, Patty Chang, John Pilson, Nadine Robinson, Sanford Biggers, Lucky DeBellevue, Emily Jacir, Jennie C. Jones, Kristin Lucas, Jennifer & Kevin McCoy, and Olu Oguibe. Punctuating art documentation are residents’ snapshots of daily life at the World Trade Center, offering a more intimate portrait of the Twin Towers post-9/11. The residency program is currently located in the historic Equitable Building at 120 Broadway on the 8th floor, in space generously donated by Silverstein Properties. Edited by Moukhtar Kocache and Erin Shirreff.

Your participation is desired in an online forum geared toward focusing
the theme for an interdisciplinary research residency proposal. The
discussion will take place from November 26 through December 5. In the
last few years, advances in wireless telecommunication, sensor technology,
and Geographic Information System tools have inspired a tide of
experimental creative projects. Artists are using these tools and
location-aware media to renegotiate how communication, navigation, and big
data are played out in space. As the landscape and urban streets become
the canvas for computer augmented social and physical interaction, what
possibilities emerge for practices outside the arts? How can we mutually
inspire and inform diverse practices?
We request your participation in the form of either a question or
suggested topic posted to the discussion list. Your inquiry will thus be
fielded to an invited list of scientists, researchers and practitioners
from diverse disciplines such as cognitive science, anthropology,
archaeology, sociology, psychology, literature, science fiction, theatre,
history, art history and theory, computer science, and earth sciences. We
envision the role of artists in this discussion as minimal, more
instigating than expository. You may find you will need to clarify your
intended topic. Finding a common language among disciplines may constitute
a valuable goal in itself! Your topic or question will alert scientists
and researchers to some of the issues or questions that are engaged or
encountered by artists working with locative media.
Our goal is to create an open channel for the scientist/researcher
quotient of the discussion participants, who may not have considered a
creative application of mobile media and mapping in the context of their
research. The identification of critical issues, spaces of common
interest, and potential blind spots between disciplines is of particular
interest. A bibliography will be compiled and made available at the
conclusion of this discussion. To participate in the discussion, go to
http://34n118w.net/UCHRI
Here you will find directions for subscribing to the discussion list (available by this Thursday), as well as relevant links (available now).
Your input would be a valuable factor in a multi-disciplinary research residency to take place in the next year, pending funding. The research residency itself would be attended by participants chosen through an international open call by the University of California Humanity Research Institute. We greatly look forward to hearing from you. Feel free to contact us with any questions.

Submissions sought that explore alternate methods of temporal presentation.
With the support of Johnny Amato and Synchronicity Space, Joshua Goldberg and Chris Jordan are proud to invite you to submit ideas and works for inclusion in the 2005 T-Minus2 exhibition, bringing together site-specific and alternative presentations of the digital manipulation of time.
Deadline: December 7th, 2004
Abstract: As computers and cameras become increasingly ubiquitous, a greater number of creators are becoming interested in the artistic possibilities inherent in combining these technologies. Time-distorted video is easily realized with affordable consumer equipment, and this ability has generated a wave of image-over-time interactive ‘physical computing’ installations and homegrown timelapse projects. T-Minus2 seeks to bring together exceptional realizations that explore the union of digital media and time.
Guidelines: Submissions must either be completed works (pre-recorded DVD’s, tapes),or a detailed description of the installation, including sketches, requirements, and assumptions.
Media included in submission packages must be in DVD video format, either PAL or NTSC.
Installation pieces will be set-up and removed by the individual artists.
Pieces will be on display from February 1st through February 26th at Synchronicity Space, 106 West 13th Street, New York, NY.
All copyrights to the work remain with the individual artists.
Include a one paragraph description of the piece, example media, artist(s) background, and contact information.
Please mail submissions to the following address:
T-Minus2
c/o Joshua Goldberg
170 West End Avenue, #2B
New York, NY 10023
We will try to accommodate you as best we can, and look forward to seeing your contribution.
Organizers: T-Minus2 is curated by Joshua Goldberg and Chris Jordan, New York City-based artists who have developed a body of work greatly influenced by temporal distortion of time by digital means. In addition to recording timelapsed video of their environments, both have developed installation pieces which explore the effect of mutable time on the image of the viewer.
History: In early 2004, Chris and Josh, aware of the work being done by others in the same vein, put out a call for submissions for the T-Minus 2004 festival. The resulting body of work collected for the show was varied and surprising in its subjects: biomedical documentation, urban studies, cultural artifacts, postmodern deconstruction and technical wizardry.

SCRATCH CODE
a selection of historic computational works from 1950’s – 1970’s plotter drawings, photos, prints, sculptures, film
In 1967, an exhibition on computer art called “Cybernetic Serendipity;
The Computer and the Arts” opened at ICA in London. It drew about 60,000
people and was considered one of the major events in the
institutionalization of media art. It received extremely favorable
response from the media with some reticence from critical voices who
viewed the computer aided art as a threat to pre-existing aesthetics and
artistic process.
37 years after the Cybernetic Serendipity show there are varying points
of view about code-derived works that still exists, even though the
boundaries of science, technology and art are increasingly blurring.
Should the discourse on computational art evolve around the idea of fine
art object or its process?
“Scratch Code” references the title of Manfred Mohr’s portfolio of
prints created between 1970-1975. These works are a prime example of the
formulaic methods that are pervasive throughout this show. “Scratch
Code” presents a group of artists who were early adopters of the
incorporation of code into their artistic process. Although not all the
artists in the show became fixtures in the art world, each one of them
laid the groundwork for today’s new media artists who utilize code to
reveal new forms of representation, interaction and expression.
